Basel Institute for Clinical Epidemiology & Biostatistics

Team CebOur mission is to improve decision making in health care.

New technologies entering the health care system must be based on sound evidence, provide clinically relevant benefit, be safe and represent added value to the healthcare system. We evaluate new and established technologies and provide evidence that informs decision making of patients, healthcare professionals, health policy decision makers and the industry.

We combine academic rigor, clinical knowledge and business acumen allowing us to understand the specific needs for decision making at all health care levels.

We develop and teach the methods of evidence-based medicine, in order to improve the quality of clinical research and to examine the effectiveness of health technologies in the real world setting.

Our goal is evidence-based health care at the local, national and international level.

Head of institute

Dear visitor, welcome to ceb

Health care is facing enormous challenges. The demand for health care is growing worldwide due to the increase in knowledge and available technology. While most will welcome innovation in medicine we have a problem.

Evidence as to whether new knowledge in medicine improves outcomes in ways that really matter to patients is often insufficient. In addition, new knowledge of high evidence is often insufficiently applied in clinical practice or integrated with delay into patient care.

This is where we put our focus in research and teaching. We generate and critically evaluate new evidence with the goal to change clinical practice and to improve patient outcomes.

Prof. Heiner C. Bucher MD MPH, Director ceb

Heiner Bucher

President of the Foundation

The Basel Institute for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics ceb was created in 2001. The founders had a clear vision to promote and enhance evidence-based decision making and resource allocation in the health care system. To assure the necessary core funding the foundation Institut für klinische Epidemiologie was created to support the institute and its activities.

Since the creation of our foundation the Institute has generated impressive results in patient oriented research, in transferring clinical research skills and in teaching evidence-based clinical practice.

As the president of this foundation I would like to thank the Institute's director, the staff and the founders for their dedication to evidence and patient oriented research. Their work is exemplary for new ideas, critical reasoning and innovation in the interest of patient oriented care.

Reto Guetg MD, President of the foundation

Team members

ceb offers career opportunities for various specialists from health sciences, including physicians, clinical researchers, clinical epidemiologists, biostatisticians, pharmacologists, health economists, specialists in informatics and data managers. We closely collaborate with clinicians and researchers at the University Hospital and University of Basel and with national and international researchers. Interdisciplinary research is one of our strengths.

The direct contact with clinicians and patients is at the center of our research and teaching activities. It allows us to better understand the clinical problems in their context and to contribute to optimized clinical research.

For this reason our unit is integrated into the University Hospital. This tight connection guarantees a close collaboration and good communication with clinicians in order to strengthen patient oriented research.
